Airports
Leach Rhodes Walker are one of the principal architects involved in the rapid growth of regional airports in response to the expansion of the budget airline sector.
We are responsible for the massive expansion of Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Durham Tees Valley, working on masterplans, terminals, control tower, fire station and associated ground facilities and were the architects for the entirely new civil airport terminal at Doncaster/Sheffield, the newly named Robin Hood Airport.
In addition to the terminal buildings and airside facilities, we have also used our hotel and leisure expertise to be the designers of the new generation of hotels at Manchester Airport and East Midlands Airport; and the leisure park and hotels at John Lennon Airport.
Location: Liverpool John Lennon Airport Project Statistics: The first major build project at the airport was to redesign the main passenger terminal. The previous capacity was for 0.5million passengers per anum (MPPA) which was wholly insufficient for the projected throughput. LRW worked closely with the client to provide a terminal capable for 4.5mppa; all of which was designed and constructed around a live airport. More Info:
Location: Liverpool John Lennon Airport Project Statistics: The Integrated Distribution Depot at Liverpool Airport was a major addition to the overall development of the perimeter to the airport.
Location: Liverpool John Lennon Airport Project Statistics: As part of the growth of LJLA a new control tower was required on the south side of the runway. LRW designed and implemented the new facility which includes a conference suite below the viewing platform.
Location: Doncaster Project Statistics: LRW were appointed by RHADS to develop proposals for the relocation of an established commercial freight facility to RHADS. Client: RHADS

Location: Doncaster, Sheffield Project Statistics: The airport was previously a RAF base so the runway and control tower already existed. Everything else (infrastructure, highways, terminal, apron, fire station, fuel farm, waste water treatment works, landscaping etc) had to be created from scratch.
Location: Durham Project Statistics: DTVA is smaller airport currently processing 1 million passengers per annum. Again LRW have been involved in developing proposals for the airport generally centred on improving the passenger experience by enhancing the landside facilities and creating a new façade to the whole terminal. This façade covers the previous mix of 1960’s developments and creates a ‘wow’ factor which was much needed.
Location: Liverpool John Lennon Airport Project Statistics: Before any development progress at airports it is imperative that a masterplan framework is established. LRW have developed these at Liverpool, Robin Hood and Durham.
